Nana Visitor Says 'Battlestar Galactica' World Rough

Not a lot of actors from past Star Trek series have made their way to "Battlestar Galactica" despite it being run by one of the architects that made "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" a cult favorite, Ronald D. Moore. But room was made for Nana Visitor, who played Kira Nerys in DS9.

Five Great Doppleganger Acts on TV

It stands to reason that in an infinite universe of infinite possibilities, the odds of someone out there looking and sounding exactly like you while not actually being you will eventually approach 100%. And as any long-time sci-fi fan will tell you, if it can happen, then it will or even must, so the genre is littered with look-alikes, evil twins, and artificial Xerox copies of characters.
The Elena/Katherine double-act introduced in last seasons finale of The Vampire Diaries, and continued on into this new season, is just the latest in a long line of sci-fi and fantasy doppleganger acts on television. Sometimes its done for story reasons (like Elena/Katherine). Sometimes its done to give an actor a chance to stretch a little. And sometimes, as with George Malory dying on Mt. Everest or a dog licking its privates, its done simply because it can be done.
Whatever the reason behind their, here are five of the greatest doppleganger acts in the realms of science fiction and fantasy on the small screen.
1. Samantha and Serena

Probably the best known of all the doppleganger acts, Samanthas kooky cousin Serena was created out of boredom on Elizabeth Montgomerys part.
After a year and a half of playing goody-goody Samantha, Montgomery (who had played a variety of not-so-nice roles, including the personal assistant to Satan in an episode of Alcoa Theater) asked the writers to come up with some way of letting Sam be a little wicked. Instead, inspired by the look-alike-but-act-different identical cousins of The Patty Duke Show, they rolled out Serena in the same episode that introduced Tabitha. Serena would morph from a hippie to a mod to just about indescribable depending upon story needs.
To add to the illusion of two separate characters, later seasons would list Pandora Spocks as playing the role of Serena. That some fans never realized that those credits were a joke is a testament to Montgomerys acting (not to mention the relish with which she played the role.)
Its also worth noting that, just as I Dream of Jeannie ripped off the concept of Bewitched at its creation, it would also rip off Serena by having Barbara Eden play Jeannies evil sister, Jeannie.
2. Buffy and the Buffybot
What do you do when youre obsessed with an unobtainable woman? Some men write bad poetry. Some throw themselves into desperate wooing. Some just stalk the girl. But if youre a disturbed vampire in Sunnyvale whos already gone down the bad poetry route, you get your evil genius buddy to build you a sex-doll robot version of the girl. At least thats what Spike did.
Initially programmed to be head over heels for Spike and to hate Angel, the Buffybot gave Sarah Michelle Geller a chance to play against character for a while at the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayers turbulent fifth season and injected some much needed comic relief into the series. She also provided a handy deus ex machina to rescue the storyline from the original series finale on the WB and make it possible to continue the show on UPN despite the lead character having been killed off. Of course, as tends to be the case when popular characters die, Buffy eventually got better and Buffybot was deactivated for good.
3. Jamie Somers and Lisa Galloway
Anyone can have a robot doppleganger try to take your place (as happened on more than one occasion to Jamie Somers OSI supervisor Oscar Goldman). But when you have a woman undergo cosmetic surgery to look like you, even if shes being coerced into doing it by her boss, well, then, youre special.
In the Mirror Image episode of The Bionic Woman, chain-smoking Georgia belle Lisa Galloway is operated on by Dr. James Courtney to look like Jamie Somers, famous tennis pro turned cyborg secret agent. She then spends two months studying Jamies voice and mannerisms before attempting unsuccessfully to kill her and steal top secrets from the Office of Special Intelligence (not to mention carrying out the shows obligatory attempt on Oscars life every other episode) but is caught out when Jamie uses her non-bionic telephone to check in at work and let them know that someone just tried to kill her. Jamie then turns the tables on Dr. Courtney by pretending to be Lisa in order to infiltrate his evil lair.
Lisa proved to be so popular that she was brought back in a two-parter called Deadly Ringer where she escapes from jail by changing places with Jamie, once again infiltrates OSI, and steals a new miracle drug that promises to give paralytics a chance to move again. She uses this drug to simulate bionic feats (right down to the NEE-NEE-NEE-NEEE sound effects) to convince everyone that shes really Jamie. Of course, this is television, so things work out in the end. Jamie gets out of prison. Lisa discovers that the miracle drug is killing her, and everyone kisses and makes nice at the end.
4. Kira Nerys and the Intendant
Star Treks mirror universe provided a plethora of dopplegangers, but possibly the most intriguing paring was that of Major Kira Nerys of space station Deep Space Nine alongside her mirror version, Intendant Kira Nerys of Terok Nor.
Where our universes Kira was hard-edged, the Intendant was a true femme fatale. Where Major Kira was deeply religious, the Intendant lacked any sort of morals at all. Major Kira bordered on asceticism while the Intendant sought pleasure above all else. Selfless versus selfish. None of the other mirror characters in the Trek universe provided as much of a contrast as these two Nerys. And no counterpart provided a better dark glass for their good version to gaze into.
It also helped that, as with Samantha and Serena, actress Nana Visitor loved playing the Intendant. In an interview in Star Trek Magazine #15, Visitor compared the Intendant to a drag queen. To me, the Intendant was close to what a drag queen would do. She was over the top, and there was a line that I loved to walk.
5. Fred Flintstone and the Alien Flintstone Robots
To round out the list, a little comic relief from a possibly unexpected choice. In the fourth season Flintstones episode Ten Little Flintstones, a flying saucer hovering over Bedrock prepares its robot invasion force. In order to better infiltrate human society, it makes all the robots look and sound just like an average human being. Unfortunately for humanity (not to mention future civilizations), the average human at the time was Fred Flintstone.
The ten Flintstone robots, all of whom have glassy stares and can only say Yabba Dabba Doo in flat, robotic monotones, cause no end of trouble for Fred, including getting him fired and smacking Barney upside the head with a sandwich. Fred eventually gets wise to whats going on (well, not really, he thinks its all a practical joke being pulled by his lodge buddies, but his claiming that he knows whats going on is all the alien needs to hear) and the mission is aborted and Earth is saved. Fred feels very good about himself, never realizing that no one noticing his being replaced by robots with a vacant stare and a three word vocabulary said a lot about his intellect and manners.
Thats my top five sci-fi dopplegangers. Which are yours?
